Pre Order Guild Wars 2? Realistic?
We can finally pre order Guild Wars 2 from several major sites. Amazon and Gamestop just to name a few.... Ship dates are Nov 3rd 2010.... Without any official release date yet.... Has anybody done this for other games in the past and is it reliable at all? Wondering how this even works and if its worth the trouble... What are your thoughts?

I need to just copy-paste this into a notepad document or something.
That is not the release date. That is simply a placeholder date made up out of thin air because the systems have to have something in order to be able to take preorders. According to NCSoft, it likely won't be out until 2011.
Anyway, I work at Gamestop. I preordered my copy the very first day it appeared in the system. And yes, it's reliable. I preorder everything I'm interested in picking up right away :P

I have not done it for any game, but im pretty sure i know how it works.
You order it and pay them now or later and you get the game when it comes out,the thing you have to keep in mind is, that they dont know the release date, they just put something that they think might be right.
So either you get the game on april 1 2010 or nov 3 2010, or december 2011.(which is what i would say is the date)

Plausible, but inefficient and a waste of time. Hovercrafts would be slow, unwieldy and/or too expensive to run and build.

Assuming you go through a legit site like the ones you mentioned, it's reliable in that you will eventually get the product (or, in in the extremely unlikely event that GW2 falls through, a refund.) A company can't simply promise you a product and then not deliver; they need to either provide the service promised or settle up with the customer. You aren't ultimately going to lose any money on this if you choose to order now.
That said, as people have already told you, the release date is not reliable at all, and in fact is almost certainly incorrect. You may be in limbo for a long time, and there's no guarantee of when you will get the product, aside from "whenever it's ready."
I've pre-ordered games before, and it has worked out fine. I would pre-order again. But personally, I wouldn't pre-order with an uncertain release date and no beta or demo yet, and I certainly wouldn't give them any money a year or two in advance.
It's not a scam or anything. But I doubt you'll see any particular benefit to ordering now, rather than in a year, unless you're going for some kind of seriously limited edition where supplies have a realistic chance of running out.

Shame. Just a whole year before the world ends. I guess I'll have to enjoy playing Guild Wars 2 in my Hovercraft while the sun boils away the Earth's core.
Happy day.

As others have said, it is merely a placeholder date and should be taken with a grain of salt.
